Robert Merkouris, MD, MS

Dr. Robert Merkouris grew up in Anchorage, Alaska before attending college at Montana State University, where he studied Cell Biology and Neuroscience. After receiving his undergraduate degree, he completed a Master's Program in Molecular Medicine before returning to Anchorage. He was part of the Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (WWAMI) medical education program that addresses the need for physicians in this region of the country and beyond. Dr. Merkouris completed his first two years of medical school in Anchorage where he received the Arthur Schnable Anatomy Award for work in Anatomy and Physiology.

Dr. Merkouris’s clinical rotations brought him to clinical sites in Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho. After completing medical school, he did his Pediatric Residency at Seattle Children's Hospital where he was involved as a leader on the Residency Council and completed research on iron supplementation in children with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. He then completed a fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, where he received the first year “fellow of the year” award for teaching and clinical competency.

Dr. Merkouris met his wife during both of their medical residencies (she was also a pediatric resident), and they moved to Pittsburgh, PA together. A golden retriever started their family and now they have a young son. Dr. Merkouris is thrilled to be back in Alaska to serve the community that provided him with such a great upbringing and to raise his family here. When he’s not caring for the children of Alaska, he loves archery, hiking, camping, fishing and woodworking. He also plays hockey and is on a local team in Anchorage.
